Socializing Appears to Delay Memory Problems

An active social life appears to delay memory loss as we age, a new study shows.

The finding, which appears in the July issue of The American Journal of Public Health, suggests that strong social ties, through friends, family and community groups, can preserve our brain health as we age and that social isolation may be an important risk factor for cognitive decline in the elderly. Problems for Irish Returning Home

Irish citizens who return to Ireland after living abroad are running into serious problems if they fall on hard times because many are being denied social welfare benefits. We have highlighting this issue for many years and recent reports bear out what ourselves and other advocacy agencies have been concerned about.

If you have lived here in the US  for two years or more you will be required to prove that Ireland is now your "center of interest". The presumption is that applicants are not habitually resident in Ireland. The onus is on the applicant to prove that Ireland is their home!

Crosscare Migrant Project has been working hard to ensure that Irish immigrants who return home are not wrongly denied benefits. See the Irish Examiner piece that highlights some of these problems

What can you do?

Resources in Ireland:

DV Lottery 2012 - Apply Online: October 2010

The next application period for the Visa Lottery (DV-2012) is on the horizon but be warned that it is not possible to apply until October 2012. Entrants will apply on Form DS-5501, the Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Form, available only during the DV open registration period.

Please beware of scams do not submit your information on any website that does not have the .gov suffix. Registration for the lottery is free so any site looking for credit card information is not the official US government site. Check the  official U.S. Department of State website for updates and check with your local Irish Center for  more information and assistance.

Locate Detainee's Online

Friends and  family members can now locate detained individuals on the Online Detainee Locator System.  You need to have either (1) the detainee's A# and country of birth, or (2) the detainee's full name, country of birth, and date of birth.

Pittsburg Leadership Program

There are opportunities for graduate engineers and other professionals from Northern Ireland colleges and universities to spend a year working with Pittsburg area companies and organizations developing sustainable technologies. Check the Ireland Institute of Pittsburg website for more information

Traveling to the US?

Visa Waiver travelers must have an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) arriving in the United States from Ireland. Sign up on line prior to travel and as always beware of scams. ESTA registration is free. Read more here
